A shrine founded by Lord Masamune in 1607 (Keicho 12), with its main shrine building designated as a National Treasure as the oldest extant Gongen-style (権現造) architecture. The shrine building, with its jet-black lacquered surfaces adorned with brilliantly colored carvings and golden decorative metal fittings, is lauded as representing the pinnacle of Azuchi-Momoyama period architectural culture. It is said that master craftsmen of the era were invited to construct it, and the carvings on the front of the worship hall and the designs embellished with white pigment offer endless visual delight in their details. Serving as the chief shrine protecting all of Sendai, it continues to draw countless worshippers as the deity of warding off misfortune, bringing good fortune, and ensuring victory. As you ascend the long stone staircase of the approach past the cryptomeria trees, the moment the jet-black shrine building comes into view is breathtaking. Comparing this shrine with Zuihoden visited in the morning, both embodying the same Momoyama aesthetic sensibility, deepens your appreciation of the cultural richness that Lord Masamune left to Sendai.

Tips

From Sendai Castle Ruins and Gokoku Shrine, approximately 15 minutes by car; by Loople Sendai, get off at 'Osaki Hachimangu-mae.' Visits are free and open to all. The front approach features long stone steps; if concerned about your legs, consider accessing from the north approach. Using binoculars to closely examine the shrine's carvings allows you to appreciate the fine details.
