Experience the 55-Meter Great Waterfall, Selected as One of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, from Both the Viewing Platform and the Basin
About this spot
Water plunges 55 meters across a width of 6 meters in this grand waterfall representing Akiu. Designated as a National Scenic Spot and selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, this is one of the finest cascades in the Tohoku region. From the waterfall viewing platform, you can see the majestic full view of white water falling straight down amid green mountains. Descending the walking trail to near the basin brings you close enough to feel the spray on your face—truly awe-inspiring. Standing enveloped by the thunderous roar, everyday fatigue seems swept away. With fresh green leaves, deep green foliage, and autumn colors creating different scenes with each season, photos taken here are always striking. At the waterfall entrance stands the Akiu Great Waterfall Fudo Shrine, and it is customary to make an offering here as well. This is the highlight of the course—where couples can fully experience nature's power.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Akiu Onsen area with a free parking lot. The walking trail to the basin features steep stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a bag you can secure around your body. The area near the waterfall gets wet from spray, so a towel comes in handy.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Daylight is best for photos. If descending to the basin, plan for early afternoon when you have plenty of energy.
