A Pure Land Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains along the Hirose River upstream from Sendai city center, affectionately known locally as 'Jogi-san' (じょうぎさん). It houses a hanging scroll of the Amida Buddha linked to the Heike clan as its principal image, with a legend that Taira no Sadayoshi (平貞能), who fled here after the Battle of Dannoura, protected and passed down this sacred object. Revered as a 'once-in-a-lifetime-wish Buddha' that grants a single great wish in one's lifetime, it draws many couples and partners seeking marriage blessings and fertility prayers. Notable sights include the imposing temple gate, the Sadayoshi Hall, the grand main hall enveloped in wood's warmth, and a five-story pagoda set against the blue sky, while the cedar-lined approach path clears the mind as you walk. The temple town features traditional souvenir shops and tea houses, making food and snack sampling part of the charm of visiting this place.
Tips
About 1 hour by car from Sendai city center; free parking available. Sendai City Bus also runs services to Jogi (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes; limited frequency, so check schedules in advance). Temple grounds are open to free worship. Since mornings are cooler in the mountains than the city, a light layer is recommended for comfort.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. An early morning visit before the tofu shop becomes crowded is recommended for a peaceful experience.
