Enjoy fresh-fried triangular aburaage topped with soy sauce and seven-spice chili pepper
About this spot
A long-established shop that has been making tofu since 1890 in the temple town of Jogi, where lines form for its famous 'Triangle Jogi Aburaage.' The thick, triangular tofu puffs are fried twice in high-heat oil to order, resulting in a crispy exterior and fluffy, juicy interior. The standard way to enjoy them is to drizzle table-side soy sauce, seven-spice chili pepper, and garlic-flavored seven-spice, then eat them on the shop's bench, as the fragrance and subtle sweetness of the tofu burst in your mouth. Available by the piece, it's perfect for a casual snack on your way back from temple worship. Take-home aburaage and tofu are also popular, as you'll surely want to recreate that flavor at home.
Tips
Located just a short walk from the temple gate in front of Jogi Nyorai Saihouji Temple. Lines form on weekends and during holiday seasons, but service moves quickly. Payment in cash is most reliable. Fresh-fried is paramount, so enjoy your order on the spot. Wet wipes are handy to prevent oil splatter on clothes.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Early to mid-morning is your best bet to avoid long lines and enjoy piping hot aburaage.
