About this spot
A scenic spot in the upper reaches of the Hirose River where waterfalls of varying heights cascade in step-like formations. The name is said to come from the beautiful sound of the water echoing like the cry of the legendary phoenix (houou). The layered flow of waterfalls with differing heights creates dynamic scenery, and the gorge transforms its appearance with each season—fresh greenery, deep green, and autumn foliage—making it the finest scenic beauty along Sakunamori Road. Easily viewable from an overlook along Route 48, it's a perfect pit stop during your drive and an ideal cooldown after the distillery tour. Surrounded by white spray cascading over rocks and the clear sound of falling water, a refreshing breeze flows through as you and your companion take in this hidden gem of the Sakunamori area.
Tips
Just minutes by car from the Miyagikyo Distillery with parking spaces and an overlook along Route 48. Viewing is free. Use caution with parking and crossing, as the main road sees heavy traffic. Since viewing is from the overlook rather than along hiking trails, a brief visit suffices. A telephoto lens will help capture the waterfall in detail.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 minutes. Midday to early afternoon when the trees are lush and vibrant is ideal for viewing.
