Immerse Yourself in the Ishinomori World at a Manga Museum with a Spaceship-Like Exterior

About this spot

A manga museum where you can experience the world of Shotaro Ishinomori, the "King of Manga," who created Kamen Rider and Cyborg 009. Ishinomori, born in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, conceived this museum as a way to revitalize Ishinomaki through manga, the hometown where he cherished memories of visiting movie theaters as a boy. The building, a silver elliptical structure reminiscent of a spaceship on Nakase Sandbank in the former Kitakami River, is a landmark on the riverbank. The permanent exhibition features Kamen Rider transformation experiences, Cyborg 009 video theaters, and plenty of precious original artworks. The museum suffered flooding on the first floor during the Great East Japan Earthquake but the building withstood the disaster and reopened, earning recognition as a "symbol of recovery." For manga enthusiasts, it's a must-visit pilgrimage site.

Tips

About a 12-minute walk from JR Ishinomaki Station; it's recommended to walk along Manga Road lined with character statues. The museum is closed on the third Tuesday of each month (every Tuesday from December to February), so check the opening calendar in advance. Special exhibitions rotate, so timing your visit to coincide with your favorite work's exhibition increases satisfaction. The museum shop has abundant limited-edition merchandise, so budget generously for souvenirs.

Best time to visit

Allow about 2 hours. The museum is quieter right after opening in the morning, so you can enjoy transformation experiences and other attractions at a leisurely pace.
