Touch the Memories of the Disaster and the Steps of Recovery at the Hill of Prayer and Transmission Facility

About this spot

A reconstruction memorial park opened on the site of the Minami-hama and Kadowaki districts, which suffered devastating damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Across approximately 38.8 hectares of spacious grounds stand a "Place of Prayer" for mourning the deceased and a hill with views of the sea. The "Miyagi Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Museum" (みやぎ東日本大震災津波伝承館) within the park allows visitors to quietly learn about the facts and lessons of the disaster through videos and exhibits. The very transformation of this former residential neighborhood into a green park speaks to Ishinomaki's recovery. Located directly below Hiyoriyama Park, you can now walk and experience firsthand the area you looked down upon from the hilltop. By connecting with the harbor town's memories alongside manga's joy, your understanding and affection for Ishinomaki as a place will deepen even further.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Hiyoriyama Park. Museum entry is free; it closes on Wednesdays (generally) so check the schedule in advance. The grounds are vast with little shade, so bring a hat, water, and wear comfortable walking shoes. This is a place for quiet prayer and reflection, so be mindful of photography and conversation volume.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour. Late afternoon with soft light is ideal—pair the museum visit with a stop at the Hill of Prayer.
