Pay Respects at the Chief Shrine of Mutsu Province: The 202-Step Main Approach and Harbor Views from the Elevated Grounds
About this spot
The chief shrine of all Shiogama shrines throughout Japan, and the chief shrine of Mutsu Province, affectionately known as "Shiogama-sama" since ancient times. The principal deity, Shiodetsuchi no Okina (塩土老翁神), is said to have taught people the art of salt-making and represents the origins of Shiogama, the sushi town—a sea deity in the truest sense. The current shrine buildings were constructed by the Sendai Domain's Date family during the Edo period and are magnificent in scale. Fourteen structures, including the main hall and prayer hall, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. At the top of the 202 stone steps of the main approach, a vermillion-lacquered gate tower welcomes visitors, and within the grounds stands the Shiogama Cherry Blossom (塩竈ザクラ), a notable tree designated as a National Natural Monument. From this elevated shrine ground, you can take in sweeping views of Shiogama Harbor and the ships passing through. Within the same grounds stands Shiwahiko Shrine (志波彦神社), and visiting both shrines together is one of the pleasures of your pilgrimage.
Tips
From JR Senzan Line's Honshiogama Station (本塩釜駅), it is about a 15-minute walk to the main approach entrance. If you're traveling with grandparents who worry about the 202 steps, there is a gentler slope on the eastern approach (East Approach / back slope) or you can drive to a parking lot near the shrine grounds. The grounds feature crushed stone and stone paving, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. An early morning visit when the air is crisp and clear is refreshing, and the harbor views from the elevated grounds are also beautiful.
