Retro Architecture Tour at a Taisho-Era Dual Western-Japanese Style Residence

About this spot

A residence built during the Taisho period by Kamei Bunpei, the first president of Kamei Shoten (later Kamei Corporation), which was founded in Shiogama. It is a rare surviving example of a "dual Western-Japanese style residence" that combines a full-scale Western building and a traditional Japanese structure under one roof. The highlights are the contrast between the modern Western-style reception room and the tranquil adjoining Japanese tatami rooms, allowing you to glimpse vividly how businessmen of that era lived. Located on an elevated site along the back slope of Shiogama Shrine, the windows offer views of the harbor town's streetscape. On days when volunteer staff are present, you can hear stories about the building and the history of Shiogama while touring, making this a retro-architecture spot that can be enjoyed across generations—from children to grandparents.

Tips

From Honshiogama Station, it is about a 10-minute walk; the residence is partway up the back slope of Shiogama Shrine. Admission is free (with a donation box for maintenance support). Since opening days and hours are limited, it is reassuring to check the opening status before visiting. You remove your shoes inside, so wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 40 minutes. The time slot before lunch is relatively quiet, allowing you to listen to the guide and view the residence leisurely.
