Lunch: Create Your Own "My Kaisen-don" (My Seafood Rice Bowl) with Toppings of Your Choice
About this spot
A large-scale seafood wholesale market with about 100 shops and general public access—one of Japan's largest. The market is right at the feet of Shiogama Harbor, known for its fresh tuna landings, so many shops deal in tuna, with displays of seasonal fish and shellfish lined up throughout. The specialty is the "My Kaisen-don" (My Seafood Rice Bowl): purchase a rice set at the market's dining corner and freely arrange sashimi of your choice on top. Whether Dad prefers tuna alone, or a child loves sweet shrimp, each person can create their own unique bowl—perfect for a three-generation family meal with varied tastes. The experience of selecting toppings while chatting with the shop staff becomes the main course itself, allowing you to feel the rich seafood food culture of Shiogama, the sushi town, directly.
Tips
From the former Kamei Residence, it's about 5 minutes by car (about 25 minutes on foot); from JR Senzan Line's Higashi-Shiogama Station (東塩釜駅), it's about a 15-minute walk. Closed Wednesdays, operating from early morning to early afternoon (about 1 PM on weekdays, about 2 PM on weekends and holidays), so arriving early for lunch is essential. Having cash makes shopping smoother.
Best time to visit
Allow just over 1 hour. Arriving before noon when toppings are abundant is recommended. As the market closes in the afternoon, late morning to noon is the ideal timeframe.
