A disaster heritage site preserving and exhibiting the former Kesennuma Yokoyo High School building, damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami and kept in its original condition. The tsunami-washed cars trapped inside the building and bent pillars tell a tale of devastation with impact beyond words. Through video theater and exhibits, visitors can learn in sequence what happened that day and how people survived. Being able to see with your own eyes the height the tsunami reached even the school's rooftop is unique to this location. The exhibits are designed to be easily understood by children and offer value as a catalyst for families to discuss disaster prevention. It will be an important hour to deeply understand Kesennuma as a harbor town living with the sea, not ending with just enjoyment.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Kesennuma city center. Admission is 600 yen for adults, with discounted rates for elementary, middle, and high school students. Visitors walk through the school building following a set route, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Exhibits address tsunami damage, so supervise young children closely. The hall has closing days (Mondays, etc.), so check in advance.

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon hours allow for calm viewing.
