About this spot

A scenic spot at the southern tip of Kesennuma jutting into the Pacific Ocean, part of Sanriku Fukko National Park. The Shio-fuki Iwa (Tide-blowing Rock), where seawater dramatically sprays upward through rock fissures each time waves strike the limestone rocks, is a famous attraction—on days with high waves, white spray rises several meters high, drawing exclamations from children. At the cape's tip stands a pine tree whose branch shape resembles a dragon after enduring the tsunami, earning it the name Ryu-no-matsu (Dragon Pine), cherished as a symbol of recovery. A bronze statue of Yokozuna Hidenoyama Raigorou, who hailed from this area, also stands here, making it enjoyable to visit historical sites. An unobstructed horizon, the scent of the rocky shore, and the sound of breaking waves envelop the sunset cape—a perfect place to end a day in the harbor town.

Tips

About 20 minutes by car from Kesennuma city center, about 10 minutes from the Great East Japan Earthquake Ruins & Heritage Hall. Free parking available. The rocks become slippery when wet, so hold children's hands and avoid getting too close to the breaking waves. A jacket is reassuring on windy days. The tide-blowing rock is most impressive on days with high waves.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Evening hours are beautiful, as western sunlight silhouettes the pine.
