The Famous Kirakira Bowl and Seafood Food Stalls: The Heart of Minami-Sanriku Dining

About this spot

Located on an elevated plateau by Shizugawa Bay, this is Minami-Sanriku's hub for food and shopping. Designed under the supervision of architect Kuma Kengo, the complex features rows of single-story buildings made of Minami-Sanriku cedar, with around 30 shops including fresh fish retailers, eateries, and sweet shops. The main attraction is the signature 'Minami-Sanriku Kirakira Bowl,' where restaurants in town compete to showcase seasonal seafood that sparkles like jewels. It transforms with the seasons: 'Spring Herald Bowl' in spring, 'Sea Urchin Bowl,' 'Autumn Delights Bowl,' and 'Salmon Roe Bowl,' each a must-try for food lovers. After your meal, enjoy comparisons of fish cakes, seaweed, and sweets, hunt for souvenirs like dried fish and local sake, and from the plaza you can see the Reconstruction Memorial Park across the Yahata River.

Tips

About 3 minutes by car from the Sanriku Expressway Shizugawa IC; free parking is available. The BRT Shizugawa Station (志津川駅) is adjacent to the shopping street for easy access. Popular Kirakira Bowl restaurants develop queues at lunch, so arriving soon after opening or before 11:30 AM is recommended. Operating days vary by shop, so confirm your target restaurant's schedule in advance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes (including food stalls and lunch). To avoid lines at the bowl restaurants, aim to arrive before 11:30 AM.
