Adjacent to Sansan Shopping Street, this disaster heritage facility passes down the memories and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake to the future. Inside the distinctive building designed by architect Kuma Kengo, learning programs and video theaters are based on testimonies from people in Minami-Sanriku affected by the tsunami. The facility is structured so visitors can consider for themselves, 'What would I do on that day?' Contemporary art by master artist Christian Boltanski is also on display, offering time to quietly confront the disaster. Touching the town's journey alongside the sea, right beside the liveliness of the shopping street, will deepen your appreciation of the meaning behind the bowl you savored at lunch.
