A Panoramic View from the Hill of Prayer: The Former Disaster Prevention Building and Town Below—A Park of Commemoration and Restoration

About this spot

Beyond the Nakahashi Bridge (中橋), which spans the Yahata River from Sansan Shopping Street, stretches this park established to commemorate victims of the disaster, console their spirits, and express hopes for recovery. The elevated 'Hill of Prayer' within the park houses a repository for a memorial listing the victims' names, from whose summit you can see the town of Shizugawa and the sea spread before you. At the base of the hill, the former disaster prevention building (旧防災対策庁舎), which remained as a skeleton after being struck by the tsunami, is preserved as a disaster relic, standing quietly to recount the past. The Nakahashi Bridge connecting the shopping street and park was designed by Kuma Kengo and conveys the warmth of wood, making it a photo spot in itself. Stroll leisurely after your meal, and feel the town's prayers and restoration through your senses.

Tips

Just across the Nakahashi Bridge from Sansan Shopping Street; admission is free and open to the public. The Hill of Prayer features a gentle slope and is easy to walk. Remember this is a place of commemoration and view it quietly. Sea breezes pass through, so bringing a light layer is recommended in spring and fall.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Perfect for a post-lunch walk, with particularly spectacular views on clear days.
