Grand Gorge Roughly 100 Meters Deep—A Complete View of Daishinzawa Bridge and Gorge Beauty from the Overlook

About this spot

A grand canyon carved by the Otani River over countless ages, plunging roughly 100 meters deep. Sheer cliffs stretch for approximately 2.5 kilometers, making it one of Michinoku's most celebrated scenic destinations. From the overlook in front of Nariko Gorge Rest House, you can take in the complete panorama of the Daishinzawa Bridge's arch spanning the gorge and the deep V-shaped valley below. The gorge's beauty transforms seasonally from fresh spring greenery to autumn foliage, breathtaking in every season. Fall is particularly spectacular when the entire valley turns crimson and gold, drawing visitors from across the country as a renowned viewing spot. If you have time and stamina, a walk through the forest along the Daishinzawa Promenade Trail is highly recommended. Whether viewing from the bridge or along the trail, each new vantage point reveals fresh photographic compositions—a paradise for photography enthusiasts who could lose hours capturing images.

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes by car from JR Nariko Onsen Station. There is a parking area in front of Nariko Gorge Rest House (note: very congested during fall foliage season). The promenade trail is closed seasonally due to snow; check local information for open status if you plan to walk. Light footwear is fine for the overlook, but sturdy non-slip shoes are recommended for the promenade trail.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes total. The crisp morning air makes the morning ideal, and for fall foliage, arriving early before crowds gather is recommended.
