A temple to traditional kokeshi, founded when a collection donated by Kaname Fukazawa, a children's author passionate about kokeshi, became the museum's nucleus. Inside, thousands of traditional kokeshi from Nariko—the local style—and regions across Japan line the halls. As you compare the distinct facial features and body patterns of different origins, the unique character of each region comes to life. Nariko kokeshi are distinguished by their hinged construction that produces a squeaky 'kii-kii' sound when the head is rotated, and their vibrant hand-painted floral patterns centered on chrysanthemums. Museum artisans give live demonstrations working at their lathes, and watching a single piece of wood transform into a kokeshi is mesmerizing. A hand-painting experience (fee required) lets you freely paint an unpainted kokeshi, creating a one-of-a-kind souvenir.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Nariko Onsen Station, on a hilltop along the route back to the hot spring town from the gorge. The museum has winter closure periods; confirm opening status before visiting. The hand-painting experience takes 30 minutes to an hour, so allow adequate time if participating. The in-museum gift shop sells kokeshi by artisans.
