About this spot

A circular crater lake about 325m in diameter, known as the symbol of the Zao mountain range. Filling the crater surrounded by Mount Katta, Mount Kumano, and Mount Goshiki, its surface has also been called Goshiki-numa (Five-Color Pond) because the water's color shifts moment by moment from emerald green to deep lapis blue depending on how the sunlight hits it. Because the strongly acidic lake water supports no life, the contrast between its mysterious hues and the barren volcanic terrain is stunning enough to leave first-time viewers speechless. From the parking lot at the end of the Zao Highline (蔵王ハイライン), the scenic mountain road branching off from the Zao Echo Line, it's just a short walk to the observation deck, making it an easily accessible driving destination. From the ridgeline around the summit of Mount Katta, you can take in a sweeping view of Okama and the mountains of both Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures.

Tips

The Zao Highline is a toll road costing 550 yen for regular cars, and it's the only route to reach Okama by car. In a typical year, the Zao Echo Line is closed for winter from early November to late April, so check road status in advance. Even in midsummer, the summit area feels chilly, with frequent sudden weather changes and thick fog, so be sure to bring a jacket. Fog tends to roll in during the afternoon, so an arrival in the clear-visibility morning hours is recommended.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning, before the fog rolls in, is key. On clear mornings, the lake's colors appear most vivid.
