A sweeping view of the emerald-green crater lake from the observation platform—the highlight of the Zao drive
About this spot
Known as the symbol of the Zao mountain range, this is a circular crater lake approximately 325 meters in diameter. Holding water in a volcanic crater surrounded by Mount Karita, Mount Kumano, and Mount Goshiki, the surface of the lake changes color moment by moment—from emerald green to deep lapis blue—depending on how the sunlight hits it, which is why it has long been called the "Five-Color Marsh" (五色沼). The highly acidic waters are unable to support life, and the striking contrast between its mystical colors and the barren volcanic landscape is so powerful it takes one's breath away at first sight. The observation platform is just a short walk from the parking area at the terminus of the Zao High Line, a mountain tourist road that branches off from the Zao Echo Line, making it an excellent destination for a drive. From the ridge around the summit of Mount Karita, you can take in a panoramic view of Lake Okama and the mountain ranges of both Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures.
Tips
The Zao High Line is a toll mountain road (550 yen per regular vehicle) and is the only route to reach Lake Okama by car. Typically from early November to late April, the Zao Echo Line is closed during winter, so check road conditions beforehand. The mountaintop is cool even in midsummer, with sudden weather changes and dense fog common, so be sure to bring a jacket. Afternoon clouds often form, so arriving in the morning when visibility is clear is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The morning before clouds gather is critical. On a clear day, the lake's color is most vivid in the morning.
