About this spot
This shrine stands at the summit of Mount Karita at an elevation of approximately 1,758 meters, just a short gentle walk up from the Lake Okama observation platform. With a long history of welcoming pilgrims to this sacred place honoring the mountain deity of Zao, the shrine at the summit is called the "Inner Shrine" (奥宮), while the shrine in Toogatta Hot Spring at the base is called the "Lower Shrine" (里宮)—an unusual arrangement where the deity is said to travel between mountain and village depending on the season. Beyond the stone torii gate spreads Lake Okama directly below and the mountain ranges on the Miyagi side, and on clear days you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Paying respects in the wind that sweeps across the ridge provides a refreshing sense unique to mountain driving. There are times when you can receive amulets and temple seals as travel souvenirs.
Tips
It's just a few minutes' walk from the parking area at the Zao High Line terminus and can be visited together with Lake Okama. Even in summer, the mountain summit is windy with low apparent temperatures, so a windbreaker is reassuring. The ground is sandy and rocky, so wear comfortable sneakers. When weather deteriorates, visibility can vanish instantly, so complete your prayers and photography while the weather is clear.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30-45 minutes required. Visit in the same morning as Lake Okama. On clear days with crisp air, you can see all the way to the Pacific coast.
