Experience the lives of samurai at the thatched-roof former Kosaeki House on the banks of the Sawabata River

About this spot

The former Kosaeki family residence, located along the crystal-clear Sawabata River north of Shiraishi Castle, is designated as a cultural property of the city and is one of the samurai residences of the Shiraishi castle town. The Kosaeki family served as retainers of the Katakura clan. The main house, confirmed to have been built during the Hoei era, features a simple thatched-roof design. The sitting room, kitchen, and garden fields are all preserved as they were, revealing the everyday life of lower-ranking samurai who lived modestly—quite different from the luxurious mansions of high-ranking samurai. The Sawabata River flowing in front of the residence has crystal-clear waters, and in early summer, the white flowers of sweet flag sway gently—a scene typical of Shiraishi's waterside. A short, leisurely walk from the castle, this spot offers a peaceful contrast to the castle's grandeur and allows you to savor the quiet atmosphere of the castle town.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Shiraishi Castle; the scenic route along the Sawabata River is particularly pleasant. Shoes must be removed inside the residence, so wear easy-to-slip-on footwear for convenience. The facility is modest in size, so allow about 30-45 minutes for viewing. Check with the reception desk about combination tickets with Shiraishi Castle to visit both places economically.

Best time to visit

Allow about 45 minutes. The time just before noon is less crowded, and you can enjoy the riverside stroll in peaceful quiet.
