Climb the wooden-reconstructed keep and take in panoramic views of Shiraishi's streetscape and the Zao Mountain Range

About this spot

Shiraishi Castle was the residence of the Katakura clan throughout the Edo period, with Katakura Kojuro Kagenori, a senior retainer of Date Masamune, as its founder. It is known as an exception to the One Castle per Province rule, and it remained in the Sendai Domain. The three-story tower keep that serves as the castle's main structure was reconstructed in the Heisei period using traditional wooden construction methods. Inside the castle, the thick beams and steep wooden stairs are full of the distinctive character of a wooden keep, and from the top floor, a panorama of Shiraishi's castle town and the Zao Mountain Range unfolds before you. Masuoka Park, where the castle stands, is a popular gathering place for locals, and the contrast between the stone walls and white plaster walls creates a picturesque scene from every angle. In the late Edo period, the Boshin War alliance of the northeastern clans was discussed here, making it a fitting starting point for exploring the Shiraishi castle town.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from JR Shiraishi Station, or about 5 minutes by car from Shiraishi-Zao Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Free parking is available in Masuoka Park. Remove your shoes when viewing the keep interior; the stairs are steep, so comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing is recommended. There are also combination tickets with the Historical Exploration Museum, so check at the reception desk.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning right after opening is the quietest, and the morning light beautifully illuminates the white plaster walls.
