Spend a fluffy-cute moment with over 100 free-roaming foxes
About this spot
A unique animal park in the mountains of the Zao range where foxes are raised in a free-roaming environment. The park is home to over 100 foxes of various species, including Hokkaido red foxes, which you can observe up close as they nap among the trees, play with one another, and go about their daily lives. Their fluffy tails curled into round shapes and their lively vocalizations are sure to captivate anyone, whether a fox enthusiast or not. The fluffiness is especially spectacular during the winter coat season, and each season brings its own charm. Depending on the time of year, hands-on fox experiences (fee required; conditions apply) may also be available. For groups of animal-loving friends, two hours here will fly by in an instant—this is the highlight of the course.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from the Shiraishi city area, along a mountain road. Public transportation is limited, so a car or taxi is practical. In the free-roaming area, walk slowly and upright; be sure to follow the park's rules, such as not touching the foxes or crouching down. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and in winter, equip your vehicle with tires suitable for icy roads.
Best time to visit
Allow about 2 hours. Early to mid-afternoon is when the foxes are most active. The fall and winter seasons with their winter coats offer the maximum fluffiness.
