About this spot
A waterside park overlooking Zaikuiwa (Lumber Rock), a National Natural Monument located in the Obara district on the upper reaches of the Shiraishi River. The rock wall, standing about 65 meters high and extending about 100 meters wide, displays columnar jointing formed when lava cooled and solidified—its appearance of neatly arranged timber logs gave it its distinctive name. In front of the rock wall stretches a well-maintained riverside park below the Shichikasukadam, where you can walk leisurely through the cool air around the water and stone. The park also features the Inspector's Residence (former Kimura family house), a Edo-period structure relocated from the Kamitozawa settlement, where you can learn fascinating aspects of mountain village life, such as ice storage rooms (icehouse). You'll find yourself overwhelmed by the natural beauty and eager to take a deep breath at this perfect place to end your day.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Kitsune Village, or about 30 minutes from the Shiraishi city area. Free parking and restrooms are available. While the rock wall is impressive from a distance, the park has both paved and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The mountains have an early sunset, so try to arrive while it's still light.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. The late afternoon light casts shadows on the rock face, making it ideal for photography.
