An underground exploration theme park utilizing the tunnels of Hosokura Mine, said to have approximately 1,200 years of history since its discovery. Hosokura was once a lead and zinc mine boasting one of Japan's largest scales, and after its closure, a portion was opened to the public as an observation tunnel. Within the approximately 777-meter-long tunnel, scenes of excavation using pneumatic hammers and the working scenes of miners are recreated with figurines and sound effects, drawing visitors deeper into the underground world with each step. The tunnel temperature remains nearly constant year-round, feeling cool in summer and warmer than the outside in winter—a unique characteristic of a mine. The popular gold panning experience (additional fee) is authentic, where visitors search for gold flakes from sand in a trough, captivating children to grandparents alike across generations. For a family fond of vehicles, the fact that this location was once near the terminal station "Hosokura Mine Park Station" of the Kurihara Denen Railway will surely make hearts race.
Tips
Approximately 30 minutes by car from the Wakayanagi Kanari Interchange of the Tohoku Expressway, with free parking available. The tunnel maintains a cool temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius year-round, so bringing a light jacket is recommended even in summer. Some areas have wet footing, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The gold panning experience has set reception times, so confirm at the time of entry.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required (tunnel observation + gold panning experience). Early morning, right after opening, is less crowded and allows more time for the following itinerary.
