About this spot
A museum that preserves the memory of the Kurihara Denen Railway—nicknamed "Kuriden"—which connected Ishikoe and Hosokura Mine Park Station and long served as transportation for the region. The former rail yard and engine house near the abandoned Wakayanagi Station have been preserved and reused, allowing close viewing of diesel railcars like the KD95 type that actually ran on the line. The driving simulator where visitors can experience being a train driver and the meticulously reproduced railway diorama of the scenic countryside along the line are hugely popular with children. Exhibits of tickets, uniforms, and rail maintenance tools evoke nostalgic memories in the grandparent generation. Visiting the preserved old Wakayanagi Station building and platform together makes for a memorable three-generation commemorative photo with the vintage vehicles as a backdrop. It's a place where families can engage in lively "vehicle talk."
Tips
Approximately 40 minutes by car from Hosokura Mine Park, and about 10 minutes from the Wakayanagi Kanari Interchange of the Tohoku Expressway, with free parking. Check the opening calendar in advance as the museum has closure days. Riding events on heritage-preserved vehicles and railbike experiences are held on certain days, so checking official information beforehand allows for even more enjoyment.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. A leisurely visit before lunch is recommended, with an early turn at the simulator to avoid crowds.
