A nature observation facility on the banks of Izu Marsh and Uchi Marsh, Ramsar Convention wetlands, affectionately known as the "Bird Hall." Izu Marsh and Uchi Marsh are renowned as premier wintering grounds for wild geese and ducks in Japan; in winter, spot-billed geese and whooper swans arrive in massive flocks that fill the sky, and in summer, lotus flowers adorn the water surface. Within the facility, visitors can learn about creatures living in the marshes through taxidermy displays, specimens, and panels. From the observation deck, telescopes provide panoramic views of the marsh, allowing close observation of waterfowl that change appearance with the seasons. Within a full day spent touring underground depths and railways, this moment of touching the sublime natural beauty of the wetlands provides a pleasant accent. It's a spot where grandchildren and grandparents gaze into shared telescopes in turn, where time flows peacefully.
Tips
Approximately 10 minutes by car from the Kuriden Museum, located on the southern shore of Izu Marsh with free parking. The observation deck telescopes are available for free use, but bringing personal binoculars enhances exploration around the marsh. Winter dawn and dusk are famous for spectacular simultaneous takeoffs and roosting of spot-billed geese, making revisiting in different seasons worthwhile.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. Early afternoon with bright daylight offers good marsh visibility. Winter mornings and evenings showcase spectacular flyover scenes.
