The World of the Kanto - Witnessing Actual Lantern Poles and Skillful Artistry

Affectionately known as 'Neburi Nagashi-kan,' this experiential facility introduces Akita's folk performing arts. In the soaring exhibition hall stand towering Kanto—lantern poles with lanterns arranged like rice stalks that replace straw bundles—in all their height and splendor, inviting awestruck upward gazes. The 'Daiwaka' (large Kanto) measures about 12 meters long with 46 lanterns; videos and materials explain the skillful artistry of balancing the pole on the forehead or waist. A unique feature of this hall is the opportunity to experience Kanto's heat and energy even outside festival season, with hands-on experiences where visitors can try lifting a Kanto pole. Exhibits on other folk arts traditions passed down in Akita, such as the floats of the Tosaki Shinmei Shrine festival, are equally rich, offering a comprehensive view of the town's festival culture.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from the Akita Prefectural Museum of Art; the adjacent Kyū Kaneko Family Residence offers joint admission. Entry is affordable at around 100 yen; combination tickets with the Red Brick Township Museum are also available. Kanto lifting demonstrations and experiences have set times—check the day's schedule at the entrance.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. The afternoon is relatively unhurried; timing your visit with a lifting demonstration makes it even more enjoyable.
