Meiji-Era Romance and Local Crafts in a Renaissance-Style Former Bank

This township museum occupies a Western-style building constructed in the Meiji period as the former Akita Bank headquarters, designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The contrast between red brick and white ceramic tiles creates a beautiful Renaissance-style exterior, and the interior reveals the refinement of Meiji-era banking architecture—ornate plaster ceiling decorations and marble embellishments in the former banking hall. The museum features exhibits on Akita's master craftsmen, including a memorial room dedicated to blacksmith Sekiya Shiro and displays of works by woodblock artist Katsu Hei Tokushi. A delightful experience is comparing the detailed woodblock prints depicting old Akita landscapes with the actual streetscapes you've walked throughout the day. The evening hours, when sunlight makes the red brick glow deep and rich in color, carry a romanticism perfect for concluding your town walk.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from the Folk Performing Arts Transmission Hall; also walkable back to Akita Station. Entry is around 200 yen; a combination ticket with the transmission hall offers savings. Most of the interior is photographable, but follow posted guidelines in exhibition rooms. Closed during New Year holidays.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. Around 4 p.m., when the exterior is bathed in sunset light and looks most picturesque, is ideal for concluding your day's walk.
