Birch-bark craftsmanship is said to have spread as a side occupation for samurai during the Edo period and is designated as a National Traditional Craft. The hall's biggest attraction is the live craftwork demonstrations, where you can watch artisans apply heated tools to the bark, polishing it to a lustrous caramel gloss with meticulous precision. The exhibition room displays works by master craftspeople and historical materials of Kakunodate, and the shop carries everything from tea canisters to tea scoops and affordable small items—making souvenir selection an enjoyable experience. Tips
Located at the entrance side of the samurai mansion street, just a few minutes' walk from Aoyagike and Ishiguroya. Demonstrations don't run during all hours, so check with the reception desk about demonstration times for a guaranteed viewing. The hall has few steps and is easy for grandparents to navigate.
