Warmth of Wooden Beams in a Historic Schoolhouse: Nostalgic Rest

About this spot

A restored wooden schoolhouse of the former Katsunai Elementary School Katamata Branch, which closed in 1975, now open to the public. Polished wooden plank corridors, classrooms lined with wooden desks and chairs, and old daruma stoves preserve the school atmosphere intact. Stepping inside fills your heart with nostalgia. Every angle—from light streaming through windows casting shadows on wooden floors—is picture-perfect, a photographer's paradise. You can touch the organ, sit at the old desks, and share childhood memories together, making it an ideal spot for couples to reminisce about their younger years. Away from the bustle of the lakeside, you can spend a leisurely, peaceful moment midway through your drive.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Gozaiseki Shrine; free parking available. Inside the building, remove your shoes and change into provided slippers. During winter, hours and closed days may change, so confirm in advance for peace of mind. Open flames are strictly prohibited inside, and handle exhibits gently.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Soft afternoon light streaming into the classroom offers the most nostalgic atmosphere.
