About this spot
An observation platform at approximately 630 meters elevation, known as the southern gateway to Lake Towada. Below, the surface of Lake Towada spreads wide, cradled by the outer caldera mountains, with a view encompassing the unique lake shape formed by the Okura Peninsula and Nakayama Peninsula—a grand panorama renowned as the finest view of Lake Towada. The contrast between the deep blue unique to a double caldera lake and the green forest that frames it is breathtaking, and standing here at day's end brings all your exploration memories rushing back. The observation platform is two-story; climbing the stairs opens your view even further. The drive from Oyu along Route 103's "Woodland Line" heading toward Lake Towada is exhilarating, and as you approach the pass, the lake peeks in and out among the trees—a moment that makes you want to cheer with your children.
Tips
Approximately 30 minutes by car from Oyu Stone Circle, located along Route 103 with free parking and restrooms. The pass road has many curves, so drive carefully. The elevation is high and it's cool even in summer evenings, so a light cardigan is comfortable. In winter, some sections may be closed due to snow, so check road conditions beforehand.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 to 45 minutes required. Late afternoon when the western sun illuminates the lake surface is the most beautiful time
