A Mystical Spectacle: Mount Chokai's Meltwater Gushing from Moss-Covered Rocks

A seepage waterfall approximately 30 meters wide where snow and rain that accumulated on Mount Chokai seep into the earth over many years and gush forth all at once from the lava rock face. The pristine seepage water, selected for Japan's Heisei-era 100 Best Springs by the Ministry of the Environment, remains cold year-round, keeping the surrounding area cool even in midsummer. A white curtain of water cascades down the moss-covered green rock face, with spray drifting like mist—a sight so beautiful it feels like wandering into another world. The forest trail from the parking area follows a gentle path beside a small stream, and as your three generations chat while walking through the dappled sunlight, the sound of water grows louder, building anticipation. Whatever angle you frame with your camera becomes a picturesque scene of mystic beauty.
Tips
The forest trail is approximately 15 minutes on foot one-way from the parking area. The gravel path and wet rocks are slippery, so wear sturdy hiking shoes. The area near the seepage can feel chilly even in summer, so bring a light jacket for comfort.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Morning light filtering through the trees makes the water spray glisten especially beautifully.
