About this spot

This is the terminal station of the Chokai-Sanroku Line, and the gateway to Yashima, a former castle town where the Ikoma clan established their residence during the Edo period. The sight unique to a terminal station, where the tracks abruptly end just beyond the platform, is irresistible for railway fans, and the spot in front of the station name sign is a classic location for family photos. The station building has a shop and a tourist information corner, and browsing local sweets and railway goods is one of the pleasures here. In the waiting room, where people come and go waiting for the return train, the relaxed pace of time in this mountain town flows by. From here, switch to a car and head for the ranches and waterfall spread out at the foot of Mount Chokai. This station serves as a knot tying together the railway journey and the highland drive.

Tips

For Hanatate Farm Park and Hottai Falls, moving by car from the station is convenient. Taxis are limited in number, so booking ahead is reassuring. If renting a car, you can also rent it on the Ugo-Honjo side and pick it up at Yashima. Check the return train time before strolling around the station area.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. After getting off the train, take your time looking around the platform and station building before moving on
