About this spot

Gathering meltwater from Mount Chokai, this famous three-tiered waterfall drops about 57m with a total flow length of about 100m, and is chosen as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls. The water, spreading out as it slides down the rock face, is powerful yet somehow elegant, and this is a representative scenic spot of Yurihonjo, also known as a filming location for the movie Tsurikichi Sanpei (釣りキチ三平). A grassy park spreads out facing the falls, and it's a treat for families with children to be able to spread out a sheet and take a break while watching the waterfall. In the seasons of fresh green leaves and autumn foliage, the surrounding mountains add color, and you won't be able to stop taking photos. This is a fitting spot to end the day, letting you feel the raw power of nature at the foot of Mount Chokai with your whole body.

Tips

About 30 minutes by car from Yashima Station. The road runs through the mountains, so allow plenty of time for driving. While the grassy park is easy to walk on even for small children, the ground near the falls can get slippery from spray, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in. The road is closed in winter, so a visit from spring through autumn is recommended.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Late afternoon while the sun is still high is easiest for viewing, and it's even more beautiful during the fresh green or autumn foliage seasons
