Walk Through Kaze no Matsubara (風の松原), One of Japan's Largest Black Pine Groves
About this spot
This is Japan's largest black pine grove, with approximately 7 million Pinus thunbergii trees planted continuously since the Edo period to prevent flying sand from the Japan Sea. The expansive green belt, stretching roughly 1 km east-west and 14 km north-south, has been recognized as one of "Japan's 100 Soundscapes," where the rustling of wind through the branches and the scent of pine delight the senses. Well-maintained walking paths and cycling courses wind through the forest, and strolling under dappled sunlight feels like a deep forest despite being just outside the city. Moments with your children collecting pinecones or listening to the wind are simple yet memorable. Learning the story of this windbreak forest tended by ancestors across generations will make each pine tree before you seem wonderfully resilient.
Tips
Parking is available near the "Ikoi no Hiroba" (leisure plaza) entrance. The forest offers plenty of shade and is comfortable, but insect repellent is handy in warm seasons. The paths are flat and walkable, though sandy sections exist, so sneakers are recommended. The area is large, but circling the entrance area is suitable for families.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Midday during bright hours shows off dappled sunlight beautifully and is easy for families with children to navigate.
