A highway station located along Route 13 at the southern gateway to Akita, in the Ono district of Yuzawa City, traditionally considered the birthplace of Ono no Komachi. The distinctive building is shaped like a samurai woman's court hat, as legend tells it was worn by the Heian-era poetess Komachi on her travels. Inside, you'll find a farmers' market corner with fresh morning-picked vegetables from local farms, a shop stocked with Akita souvenirs including Inaniwa udon and iburigakko (smoked pickles), and a light snack corner. Tourism information about Yuzawa is also available here, making it the perfect spot for a strategy meeting before heading to Komachi Legend sites or Oyasu Gorge. Stop here at the start of your drive to stock up on seasonal fruits and snacks while getting an early sense of why this land is called Komachi's hometown.
Tips
Conveniently located just off the Yuzawa-Yokote Expressway Masutachi Komachi IC, directly along Route 13. The farmers' market has the best selection in the morning, and popular vegetables and fruits often sell out by midday. It's also convenient for restroom breaks and picking up tourism pamphlets, so stopping here first thing is recommended.
