A V-Shaped Gorge Approximately 60 Meters Deep: Hot Water and Steam Erupting with a Thunderous Roar from Rocky Crevices
About this spot
Oyasu Gorge (小安峡) is a V-shaped gorge approximately 60 meters deep, carved over countless millennia by the rushing waters of the Minase River. The highlight is the "Grand Hot Spring Geyser" (大噴湯), where hot water and steam erupt with tremendous force from rocky crevices in the gorge floor. Descending a staircase from beneath Kawahara-yu Bridge and proceeding along the footpath, you'll witness white steam gushing powerfully from beside the rock face, creating an awe-inspiring sense of the earth's pulse that will leave you breathless. Looking upward, you see the verdant slopes of the gorge pressing down on both sides with only a thin ribbon of sky above. The panoramic view of the entire gorge seen from the bridge above is equally spectacular, and during the new greenery and fall foliage seasons, the entire valley glows with vibrant color. Walk through it, look upward, and be bathed in the mineral steam—one of Yuzawa's most impressive scenic destinations where all five senses come alive.
Tips
About a 20-minute drive from Satow Yosuke Souhonten. The footpath requires descending steep stairs, so wear non-slip, comfortable hiking shoes. The ground near the geyser outlet can be wet from steam, so be careful. The footpath is closed during snowy winters, so check accessibility beforehand depending on the season.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Best viewed in daylight when sun reaches the gorge floor. Particularly spectacular during new greenery and fall foliage seasons.
