A gem of Meiji pseudo-Western architecture standing in a corner of Kasajo Park, this three-story building was originally built as a prefectural hospital called "Saiseikata" in the early Meiji period and was relocated and restored within Kasajo Park after narrowly avoiding demolition. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Built in an era when technical manuals on Western architecture were scarce, this structure represents a remarkable achievement of local master carpenters' ingenuity in imitating Western construction methods. The distinctive first floor features a rare nationwide design with a fourteen-sided corridor circling the central courtyard. Spiral staircases and colored glass windows blend Japanese and Western elements, offering new discoveries with each step. The museum displays local historical materials and medical artifacts, with free admission. The white shiplap exterior gleaming against the blue sky makes it a representative retro building alongside Bunshohkan, captivating photography enthusiasts.

Tips

Located within Kasajo Park, about 15 minutes' walk from Yamagata Station. Free admission. The display rooms line the corridor, so take your time going around in order. Closing is at 4:30 PM, so visiting during the day as part of a park walk is most efficient.

Best time to visit

Allow about 45 minutes. Bright light in the late morning hours illuminates the corridor beautifully, and photography framed through the courtyard looks lovely.
