About this spot

This facility preserves and opens to the public the former Yamagata Prefectural Government building and the former prefectural assembly building, both restored and officially called Yamagata Prefectural Local History Museum "Bunshohkan." Both are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The impressive English Renaissance-style brick exterior is striking, and the clock tower rising from the front is said to be the second oldest active tower clock in Japan after the Sapporo Clock Tower, still wound by a clock master's hand today. Inside, the dignified main hall and VIP room with beautiful marble fireplaces and stucco decorations, as well as the soaring assembly hall, are meticulously restored—all free to view with surprisingly impressive displays. Known also as a film location, every room is photogenic, making this the leading retro building in Yamagata for a leisurely tour together with plenty of opportunity for commemorative photos.

Tips

About 20 minutes' walk from Yamagata Station toward the Nanuka-machi direction, or take the bus and get off right before Yamagata City Hall. Admission is free with unrestricted viewing. Closed on the 1st and 3rd Mondays (or the following day if a holiday). Closing is at 4:30 PM, so a morning visit is recommended for a thorough exploration.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning just after opening is quiet, and the morning light beautifully illuminates the brick exterior.
