About this spot
This park, developed from the ruins of Tsuruoka Castle (鶴ヶ岡城), the residence of the Sakai clan of Shōnai Domain, preserves the moat, stone walls, and aged Japanese cedars that echo the feudal period. Known as a famous cherry blossom spot counted among Japan's top 100 cherry blossom locations in spring, it serves as a gathering place for residents throughout the seasons. Shōnai Shrine and the Shūhei Fujisawa Memorial Hall are scattered throughout the park, and the Chidō Museum stands immediately adjacent, making this area the hub of Tsuruoka's castle town attractions. A complete circuit here gives you the full picture of the day. The park paths are flat with plenty of benches and shade, safe for even the oldest legs. Watching carp and waterfowl swimming in the moat with grandchildren makes this the perfect starting point for a three-generation morning stroll.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from JR Tsuruoka Station, or directly from the City Hall bus stop. Parking for tourists is available around the park. Some sections have little shade, so bring hats and drinks in summer. Toilets and benches are well-maintained, allowing you to rest and walk comfortably with small children or elderly relatives.
Best time to visit
Takes about 45 minutes. The early morning hours, when fewer people are around and the air is clear, are pleasant with beautiful light.
