Meiji-era pseudo-Western architecture and multi-story farmhouses: a complete tour of Shōnai life

About this spot

This museum was established on the grounds of a former residence of the Shōnai clan lords, the Sakai family, with historical buildings relocated and preserved across a wide site, creating an outdoor architectural museum. The former Nishi-Tagawa District Government Office (西田川郡役所) with its white walls and blue tower, the former Tsuruoka Police Station building, and other Meiji-era pseudo-Western architecture (all designated as National Important Cultural Properties), the thatched-roof multi-story farmhouse with helmet-shaped roofing moved from Tamugimata in the heavy-snow mountain region, as well as the Sakai family's retreat and the National Designated Scenic Sakai Clan Garden—you can compare buildings from different eras and characters all at once. The museum's collection of folk implements, which tells the story of Shōnai life, is designated a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and stories from grandparents' memories sparked by old tools are a special feature of this museum. A spot where discoveries multiply the more three generations walk together, this is the core of Tsuruoka sightseeing.

Tips

Located just west of Tsuruoka Park and walkable from the park. The site requires moving between buildings outdoors, so comfortable shoes and an umbrella for rainy days are recommended. Stairs and steps at each building mean taking time to match the grandparents' pace. Closure dates and hours vary by season, so check the official website beforehand.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The late morning allows relatively leisurely viewing, and the garden's greenery is beautifully lit by morning light.
