A Spectacular Waterfall of Spring Water Cascading Down Moss-Covered Rock Faces Over 30 Meters Wide
About this spot
A buried stream waterfall approximately 30 meters wide and 5 meters high, where snowmelt soaked into Chokaisan Mountain emerges simultaneously through rock crevices after many years underground. Unlike ordinary waterfalls where river water plunges down, countless white streams of water cascade like white curtains directly from the moss-covered lava rock face itself—a sight rarely seen elsewhere. The water temperature remains around 10 degrees Celsius year-round; even in mid-summer, the area around the waterfall is enveloped in cool air, and rising mist creates a fantastical atmosphere against the green moss and black rock. The contrast between deep green and white water is highly popular with photography enthusiasts—couples with cameras will find themselves unable to stop shooting. The walking path from the parking area to the waterfall takes approximately 20 minutes one way along the streamside trail, offering a pleasant forest-bathing experience.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Marui Pond, located on the Akita side across the prefecture border. The walking path from the free parking area to the waterfall takes about 20 minutes and has rocky sections, so non-slip shoes are essential. The area around the waterfall is prone to getting wet from spray, so a light jacket is recommended even in summer. Winter visits become difficult due to snow accumulation.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours (including the round-trip walk). Fresh greenery to summer offers the most lush scenery, and morning light brings out the white of the water beautifully.
