A subsidiary shrine at the foot of the mountain of Chokaisan Oomononushi Shrine, the foremost shrine of Dewa Province, which venerates Chokaisan Mountain itself as its deity. It stands in Fukiura as the Kuchinogu (gate shrine), complementing the main shrine at the mountaintop. According to tradition, it was founded approximately 1,400 years ago and received reverent support from the imperial court, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious shrines in the Tohoku region. The shrine grounds are enveloped in cedar groves, and beyond the stone steps lies a unique configuration with two main halls dedicated to Oomononushi Deity and Gassan Deity standing side by side; the main halls are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Turning back from partway up the stone steps, the Sea of Japan comes into view beyond the houses of Fukiura—a place where you can feel the character of Yusa, cradled between mountain and sea. Marui Pond is also a subsidiary shrine of this shrine, and realizing that you are standing on the same spiritual waters after witnessing that mysterious pond in the morning deepens the meaning of your visit.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from JR Fukiura Station; there is a free parking area. The stone steps in the shrine grounds require some climbing, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Shrine seals (goshuin) are available at the shrine office, but staff may be absent at certain times, so arrive with time to spare. Visits are free and open to all.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Midday attracts fewer visitors, and light filtering through the cedar groves beautifully illuminates the shrine buildings.
