About this spot
A guidance facility introducing the history and culture of Dewa Sanzan, located in the Tewata district at the entrance to Haguro Mountain's main approach. You can easily learn about the faith in Haguro, Gassan, and Yudonosan, as well as the world of mountain priest training, through exhibits of priestly garments and ritual implements, plus large-format video displays. There's also a popular corner where you can touch the horagai conch shell that mountain priests blow. Understanding the meaning of Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage, called the "journey of rebirth," before heading onto the sanctuary path changes how you perceive the cedar groves and pagoda entirely. Its convenient location—just a short walk to Zuishinmon Gate—makes it perfect for preparation before the sanctuary walk. The hall also has a rest area and serves as a reliable base for organizing yourself before the mountain hike.
Tips
From Tsuruoka Station, take the bus bound for Haguro Summit for approximately 35 minutes and get off at "Haguro Zuishinmon." By car, there is free parking around the memorial hall. Toilets and vending machines are available, making it convenient to prepare before the stone step climb. Note that there are designated closed days, so confirm the opening dates before your visit.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 45 minutes. It's best to stop by early in the morning right after opening and head straight onto the sanctuary path from there.
