About this spot
A vermillion-painted gate standing at the entrance to Mount Haguro's sacred realm, from which a sanctuary path of approximately 1.7 km and 2,446 stone steps extends all the way to the summit of Dewa Sanzan Shrine. The moment you pass through the gate, the air feels as if it clears—thanks to the deep forest enveloped on both sides by centuries-old cedars. First, you'll walk down the stone steps of the slope called Tsugiko Slope, and after crossing the sacred bridge over Harai Stream, you'll be greeted by the sight of Suga Waterfall cascading down rocky cliffs. This is where pilgrims once purified their bodies and hearts before ascending toward Dewa Sanzan, and even now, visitors continue to bow before the gate and step through. For groups of history enthusiasts, every step from here becomes a special moment in time.
Tips
A short walk from the Ideha Culture Memorial Hall. There are parking areas, shops, and restrooms nearby. Since restroom availability is limited ahead, use them here. Stone steps can be slippery after rain, so wear comfortable, grippy shoes.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 20 minutes. Early morning hours see fewer visitors, and the morning light filtering through the cedar trees creates a mystical atmosphere.
