The spiritual center of Dewa Sanzan faith, where the three sacred mountains—Haguro, Gassan, and Yudonosan—are enshrined in a single main hall. The Sanshingassai-den Shrine at the summit is a magnificent structure crowned with a thatched roof over 2 meters thick, designated as a national important cultural property. According to tradition, it was built so that all three mountains could be visited in a single pilgrimage in this snow-heavy region of Dewa, and the reflection of the vermillion shrine in the mirror pond before the main hall is breathtakingly beautiful. The sense of accomplishment upon completing the 2,446-stone-step climb to this moment is incomparable, and the view over the Shonai Plain from Nino-saka Tea House along the way is equally unforgettable. The grounds contain various points of interest such as a bell tower, and you'll want to explore at leisure this sacred site where the prayers of mountain priests still resonate.
Tips
From the Five-Story Pagoda, it's about 1 hour to the summit via stone steps. Refreshments including the famous strength mochi and matcha tea are available at Nino-saka Tea House along the way. If you're concerned about stamina, you can return to Zuishinmon Gate and take a vehicle or bus up the summit via the Haguro Toll Road. There are shops and restaurants at the summit for lunch. Mountain weather changes quickly, so don't forget rain gear.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 2 hours (including the stone step climb). Timing your arrival at the summit around midday allows you to enjoy both the shrine visit and lunch unhurriedly.
