Pay respects at Uesugi Shrine (上杉神社), the symbol of the castle town enshrined on Yonezawa Castle Honmaru Ruins
About this spot
A shrine dedicated to the legendary Sengoku general Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信), known as the strongest warrior of the era, the shrine stands at the center of Matsugasaki Park (松が岬公園) on the ruins of Yonezawa Castle's Honmaru, surrounded by moats and stone walls. After the Yonezawa Great Fire of the Taisho era destroyed the shrine buildings, they were reconstructed following designs by Yonezawa-born architect Itoh Chuuta (伊東忠太). Bronze statues of Uesugi Kenshin and Uesugi Takayama stand along the approach, and a stone monument inscribed with Takayama's famous saying "If you will it, it will be done" (なせば成る) is also a notable sight. The Treasure Hall "Keisho-den" (稽照殿) within the grounds houses precious cultural treasures including armor and swords said to be Kenshin's personal belongings and a helmet with the "love" (愛) crest said to have belonged to Naoe Kanetsugu (直江兼続). Visiting with grandchildren while recounting the tales of these generals is sure to ignite the historical passions of the grandparent generation. Beginning your castle town walk here is the classic choice for exploring Yonezawa.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car or bus from Yonezawa Station, with multiple free parking lots nearby, providing peace of mind for three-generation car travel. The Treasure Hall Keisho-den requires separate admission and may close seasonally; confirm in advance if you wish to visit. The grounds have many gravel paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Best time to visit
Takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The early morning hours are quiet, and the reflection of the moat is particularly beautiful.
