The burial grounds of successive lords of the Uesugi family, rulers of the Yonezawa domain, designated as a national historic site. The approach, lined perfectly straight with old cedar trees hundreds of years old, is hushed and still, and deep within it, the sight of the mausoleum of Uesugi Kenshin at the center, flanked in orderly rows by the mausoleums of the successive lords, is truly solemn. Since Kenshin's remains, once enshrined in the main citadel of Yonezawa Castle, were moved to this site, it has been carefully preserved as a sacred place for the Uesugi family. The mausoleums of the early lords have a dignified irimoya-zukuri (hip-and-gable) roof style, while from Uesugi Yozan, who advanced fiscal reforms of the domain through frugality, the style becomes a simple hogyo-zukuri (pyramidal) roof - it's fascinating that you can read the domain's history in the shapes of the buildings. Walking slowly with three generations along the sun-dappled approach, the weight of this noble house, continuing since the Warring States period, quietly presses upon your heart.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Uesugi Shrine; also accessible by the city loop bus. The approach is covered in gravel, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Even in summer, it's cool within the cedar grove, and insects appear, so having something to layer on and insect repellent brings peace of mind. At the reception, you can get a pamphlet explaining the site's history, and reading it as you tour deepens your understanding.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Early afternoon, when the dappled sunlight is beautiful, is quiet and recommended.
