This is the mausoleum of successive Yonezawa domain lords of the Uesugi family, designated as a National Historic Site. The approach lined with old cedars centuries old stands in hushed silence; beyond them, the mausoleum of Uesugi Kenshin stands at the center with successive lords' mausolea arranged in orderly rows on either side—a truly solemn sight. Since Kenshin's remains, previously enshrined at Yonezawa Castle's Honmaru, were moved to this location, it has been carefully preserved as the sacred domain of the Uesugi family. The mausolea of the early lords feature impressive irimoya-style (入母屋造) roofs, while those from Uesugi Takayama onward—who promoted domain reforms through frugality—display simpler hogyoza-style (宝形造) structures, offering fascinating insights into the domain's history through architecture. A leisurely three-generation walk along the dappled-light approach will make the weight of this illustrious family line quietly press upon the heart.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Uesugi Shrine; also accessible by city circulation bus. The approach has a gravel surface, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The cedar grove remains cool even in summer; bring a light layer and insect repellent for comfort. Information pamphlets explaining the site's history are available at the reception, which enhance understanding as you walk through.

Takes approximately 45 minutes. Early afternoon when dappled light is beautiful and peaceful.
