A street below Kaminoyama Castle where thatched-roof samurai mansions line the way. This precious corner tells the story of the Kaminoyama clan samurai who once lived here, and the street with its succession of hedge fences and gates makes you feel like you've stepped back in time to the Edo period. Most of the mansions are still used as residences, so viewing from the street is the standard; but the heavy thatched roofs and well-maintained garden greenery are beautiful enough to enjoy just by looking. Since it's within walking distance of the castle, exploring both together will deepen your sense of how the castle town was formed. Walking with a child while saying "That's where the samurai lived" turns this into a charming little history walk.
Tips
About 10 minutes on foot from the castle. The street is a residential area, so observe care and view quietly out of respect for residents and traffic. Most of the mansions are private homes; do not enter the properties—that's the respectful way. It's also within walking distance from Kaminoyama Onsen Station, making it easy to include in your castle town walk.
