Stroll through the scenic pond garden of the Aizu clan lord's mansion and the medicinal herb fields
About this spot
A pond-circuit stroll garden that was once the retreat of Matsudaira, the Aizu clan lord, and is designated a National Scenic Spot. The garden's name comes from the medicinal herb garden the clan lord established to protect his people from epidemics, and hundreds of medicinal plants remain in the herb specimen garden. Centered around the Shinjinoji pond, with the Rakujutei pavilion floating on an island in the pond and the thatched-roof Tea House Pavilion positioned nearby, the garden changes its appearance with the seasons. A leisurely walk around the easy-to-traverse garden paths imparts the feeling of being a daimyo of Aizu. The gently rolling terrain is welcoming to grandparents with mobility concerns, and a three-generation family photo by the pond makes a wonderful travel memento. Matcha (paid) is also available at the Tea House Pavilion.
Tips
Approximately 5 minutes by car from the Aizu Samurai Residences, or a short walk from the "Oyakuen" stop on the loop bus. The garden paths are not one-way, so you can adjust your route based on stamina and just walk around the pond if needed. Some areas have gravel and stepping stones, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer, the tree shade is pleasant, and rest shelters (azumaya) are available.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. The bright light before lunch creates beautiful reflections of the garden in the pond, perfect for photography. Plan lunch in the city center after your walk.
